MICHAEL MUNRO FROM KELTY SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT IN KELTY
A woman in Kelty endured a terrifying and violent assault at the hands of her partner, Michael Munro, resulting in serious injuries that required medical attention. The incident unfolded at an address in Kelty, where Munro, 32 years old and currently detained at Perth, was found guilty of inflicting severe harm on his partner during a brutal attack.According to court proceedings, Munro’s assault on the woman took place on October 18. The attack was characterized by a series of violent acts, including jumping on top of her, causing her to fall to the ground, and then sitting astride her. He then seized her by the throat, repeatedly punched her in the head, and ultimately threw her to the ground with force. The assault left the victim with a fractured eye socket, which was initially thought to involve a bleed on the brain. Following the attack, she experienced dizziness, blurred vision, and intense headaches, highlighting the severity of her injuries.
Depute fiscal Claire Bremner provided details about the incident, revealing that the couple had been together for approximately six months. On the day of the assault, both had been drinking at a local pub around 3 pm. During this time, Munro told his partner that he was leaving her and returning to his ex-partner. Afterward, she went home at around 5 pm and went to bed. Later, she heard loud banging at her door, and Munro suddenly appeared, running upstairs. He then jumped on top of her, and the two fell to the floor. Munro, now straddling her, grabbed her by the throat and punched her repeatedly in the face, causing her to feel light-headed.
The court heard that the woman attempted to defend herself by biting Munro’s finger. A neighbor, hearing the commotion, approached the door but left after receiving no response. Munro then went downstairs, and the woman believed he had left the house. She tried to call for help but was interrupted when Munro reappeared. During this encounter, he attempted to comfort her, but she made it clear she could not forgive him. His anger flared again, and in a moment of fear, the woman picked up a knife. Munro was reportedly laughing and filming her on his phone during this confrontation, before he threw her onto the floor once more.
In his police statement, Munro falsely claimed that his partner had assaulted him and expressed that he was “too scared to go back there.” His defense solicitor, Alexander Flett, acknowledged Munro’s struggles with alcohol and his own conduct issues, noting that arrangements had already been made to address his anger management problems. The solicitor described the relationship as “toxic” and mentioned that an argument at a public house had continued into the domestic setting.
Throughout the proceedings, the victim remained frightened of Munro and expressed a desire for a court order to prevent further contact. Sheriff Alastair Brown sentenced Munro to 18 months in prison, with the sentence backdated to October 21, the day he was remanded in custody. Additionally, a non-harassment order was imposed for a period of five years to protect the victim from further harm.
