OFFENDER MICHAEL MITCHELL JAILED FOR ASSAULTING MOTHER AND PROPERTY DAMAGE
Michael Mitchell, a 47-year-old resident of Scholes Lane in Cleckheaton, was convicted of assault and criminal damage after he physically attacked his mother and caused damage to her property. The incident involved Mitchell returning home intoxicated, where he slapped his mother on the shoulder, smashed her phone against the wall, and ripped out the wiring.
The court heard that Mitchell, who was struggling emotionally after losing his father and his job, had a history of relying on his mother and abusing alcohol and drugs.
The assault took place over 17 hours, during which he threw objects around the house, smashed another phone, and verbally abused his mother.
His behavior was described as being a result of his alcohol and drug use, which made his life a misery for his family.
Mitchell admitted his actions and stated that he had been drinking three bottles of wine daily, though he was now reducing his alcohol intake.
His sentencing was postponed to facilitate an assessment for potential alcohol treatment.
The court acknowledged that Mitchell's behavior was inappropriate but also noted his prior good relationship with his mother when sober.
