MICHAEL MAVRIDES FROM BARNET SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN 2014 AND RELEASED BY 2016

In September 2014, Michael Mavrides, a 67-year-old resident of Barnet, Hertfordshire, was sentenced to prison after being convicted of multiple sexual offences against a young girl. Mavrides had pleaded not guilty at Wood Green Crown Court to charges including sexual assault on a child under 13 and inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

During the trial, the 10-year-old victim was required to undergo cross-examination since Mavrides maintained his innocence. Despite this, the jury found him guilty of all the charges he faced. The abuse took place over a two-year period, with the girl aged between eight and ten, and involved molestation and sexual assaults.

Evidence revealed that Mavrides had befriended the girl's parents to gain proximity to her, ultimately grooming her for sexual activities. The pre-sentence report indicated that he posed a medium risk of harm to young females in the future. It was also highlighted that Mavrides was active in the second-hand motor trade, described as charming and highly manipulative.

The judge sentenced Mavrides to four years in prison, with the sentence running concurrently on each of the six charges. The court also ordered that upon release, he would be on licence, registered on the sex offenders' register indefinitely, and subject to a sexual offences prevention order.

By 2016, Mavrides had been released from prison. He reportedly owns a holiday home in Cyprus, which he is likely to relocate to.
