A former student of the University of Sussex has been found guilty of sexually assaulting or raping five women, including four individuals who were also students.
Alex Patel-Wells, aged 26, received his conviction at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday.
The Sussex Police initiated their investigation after a woman reported being raped at a property in Brighton, East Sussex, in October 2021.
Following his arrest, further inquiries revealed four more victims, with assaults occurring between 2018 and 2021.
These incidents took place at locations on the university campus, as well as in London and Brighton, including at Patel-Wells' residence.
He, of Grove Road, Barnet in north London, faced charges of five counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and two counts of assault by penetration.
The jury convicted him of all charges related to four victims specifically, four counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one of sexual assault by penetration while acquitting him of one rape and one assault by penetration.
Detective Constable Vicki Blythe described Patel-Wells as a "committed sexual offender." She praised the victims for their bravery in reporting and supporting the investigation, emphasising that their efforts led to his conviction and will likely result in a lengthy prison term.
A spokesperson for the university stated their dedication to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on campus, adding that they regularly review and enhance their safeguarding policies, reporting mechanisms, and education programs.
They expressed sympathies for the victims and acknowledged their courage in pursuing justice.
Patel-Wells is currently held in custody and is scheduled for sentencing at Lewes Crown Court on 19 December.
