BILLINGHAM MAN MICHAEL EVANS CAUGHT GROOMING TEEN ON FACEBOOK IN TEESSIDE
In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing dangers of online grooming, Michael Evans, a 50-year-old resident of Billingham, was apprehended after attempting to engage in inappropriate conversations with a girl he believed to be just 13 years old.The incident was brought to light by the vigilant efforts of the 'North West Hebephile Hunters,' a group dedicated to exposing online predators.
According to court reports, Evans was lured by a decoy operating under the pseudonym Shell Dee Coy, who was posing as a 13-year-old girl.
The decoy engaged Evans in a chat on Facebook, during which he inquired about her education on sexual matters, raising immediate concerns about his intentions.
Prosecutor Emma Atkinson detailed that during the conversation, Evans admitted in February that he was older than the girl he believed he was speaking to, who claimed to be from Leeds.
Evans's inappropriate advances escalated when he asked the decoy to meet him in person.
The girl responded by sending a photograph, which prompted Evans to comment on her physical appearance, specifically her breasts.
Despite the girl repeatedly emphasizing her age of only 13, Evans expressed a desire to have her as a girlfriend if she were of legal age, revealing his troubling mindset.
Following his arrest, Evans, who resides on Wolviston Road in Billingham, faced serious legal consequences.
He pleaded guilty to attempting to communicate with a child for sexual purposes and was subsequently sentenced at Teesside Crown Court.
His punishment includes a two-year community order, during which he must participate in 25 days of rehabilitation activities.
Additionally, he has been placed on a sexual offenders' register and is subject to a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his contact with minors.
The court also heard a disturbing history: Evans had previously sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl in 1992.
He has openly admitted to having an attraction to children, further underscoring the gravity of his offenses and the potential risk he poses to the community.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable minors from online predators.
