SKELMERSDALE MAN MICHAEL DAVENPORT CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the community of Skelmersdale, Michael Davenport, a 48-year-old resident of Thurlston, was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images of children. The incident came to light in January when authorities from CEOP, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, identified Davenport as a person of concern. Following this, Lancashire police officers visited his residence to investigate further.During questioning, Davenport was asked directly if he possessed any illegal material related to child exploitation. He did not deny the allegations and admitted to having such images stored on his computer. This confession prompted the authorities to seize his electronic devices for detailed analysis. The forensic examination revealed that Davenport had downloaded a total of 4,452 indecent images of children. These images were categorized into different levels of severity, with the majority falling into the lowest category, but some images were classified across all five categories, indicating a range of explicit content.
On Wednesday, November 21, Davenport appeared before Liverpool Crown Court to face charges. He pleaded guilty to 16 counts of possessing indecent images of children. The court proceedings highlighted the severity of his actions and the potential risk posed to children through such material.
Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, presided over the case and delivered the sentence. Recognizing Davenport’s frank admission of guilt, the judge remarked that this was a step towards acknowledging the problem. Davenport was sentenced to six months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.
In addition to the suspended sentence, the court ordered Davenport to participate in an internet sex offenders treatment programme, aimed at addressing his behaviour and preventing future offences. He was also required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for a period of seven years and was mandated to pay £500 in prosecution costs. Furthermore, the judge imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which restricts his internet usage for the next seven years, in an effort to prevent access to similar material and protect the community from potential harm.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies in Skelmersdale and across the UK to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
