MAN JAILED AFTER SERIES OF VIOLENT ATTACKS ON PARTNER
A brutal partner smashed a woman's head against a television screen in a series of domestic violence incidents towards her, a court heard.When another row erupted into violence he pushed her into a mirror which smashed it.
At Grimsby Crown Court, Michael Carlisle, 41, formerly of Patrick Street, Grimsby, admitted an offence of strangulation on July 5 last year and coercive and controlling behaviour between June 1, 2024 and July 5 last year.
The father of three also admitted possession of cannabis when he was arrested by police.
Prosecuting, Hannah Turner said the couple had been in a relationship for a year after meeting in their workplace.
The woman had been in a previous relationship characterised by domestic violence and had been comforted by Carlisle.
However, after six months, physical attacks on her became regular incidents.
The prosecutor submitted photographs of injuries she sustained and she kept a list of the incidents.
In one attack on June 16, 2024, Carlisle had kicked and punched her and pinned her to the ground.
He also smashed her head onto a TV screen.
On November 15, a row erupted into violence where she suffered carpet burns.
Miss Turner also described how Carlisle put his hands around her neck after she slapped him in a row on January 25 last year.
She broke free and hit her partner over the head with a jar.
He later threatened to cause an explosion at her home.
There was another assault on June 27 after the Armed Forces Weekend event in Cleethorpes.
On July 5, the couple went for a drink at The Duke of Wellington pub in Grimsby at 1pm.
At 4pm that day they returned home.
Miss Turner said the woman went outside to meet someone and she was accused of cheating by Carlisle.
"He grabbed her around her throat with both hands and pushed her against a mirror two to three times.
It smashed and he eventually let go of her neck," said the prosecutor.
She hid in the bedroom and barricaded herself in before escaping out of the home.
She sought help at a nearby shop and rang 999.
But, when she turned round, Carlisle grabbed her phone.
The woman fled and sought help from two patrolling police officers.
Carlisle was later arrested at an address where police also found cannabis.
Miss Turner read from the victim impact statement, in which the woman said she had been mistreated by her partner for a long time.
"He was so loving one minute then so nasty the next minute," she said.
She added: "I truly want the best for him but I will struggle with what he has done." The prosecutor said Carlisle had 29 convictions for 83 offences, 14 of which were for violence against others.
For the defendant, Craig Lowe said his client's last offence was seven years ago.
He submitted a letter on his client's behalf.
"He is truly sorry and ashamed and regrets his actions and feels he has let down his family, especially his three daughters," he said.
He added he had addressed his alcohol and drug abuse.
Mr Lowe said: "He is addressing his behaviour so he does not do it again." He added his client had been a "model prisoner" while in custody.
Judge Gurdial Singh jailed Carlisle for four years and imposed a Restraining Order not to contact his former partner directly or indirectly for ten years.
