DYING PENSIONER PAEDOPHILE JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

A 72-year-old pensioner named Melvyn Paterson, who is battling terminal cancer, has received a 19-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple heinous child sex crimes. He was found guilty of ten separate offences, which included rape, indecent assault, inciting a girl to commit gross indecency, unlawful sexual intercourse, and encouraging sexual activity with a minor. The crimes were committed against two young victims, and the verdict was delivered by a jury following a trial at Teesside Crown Court. Despite the conviction, Paterson maintains his innocence.

During sentencing, the judge, Paul Reid, pointed out the profound psychological suffering inflicted on the victims, describing the abuse as systematic and appalling, which has caused lasting harm. He stated that both victims have experienced severe mental health issues due to the crimes. The court imposed a 19-year prison term, along with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order to prevent any contact between Paterson and the victims.

The police investigation was initiated after one of the victims reported the abuse in 2020. Cleveland Police praised the courage of the victims for cooperating with the authorities, despite the trauma they endured. The defense highlighted that Paterson is currently hospitalized at HMP Durham and receiving chemotherapy at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the cancer has spread to his lymphatic system. The defense argued this means he is unlikely to pose a safety risk if released.

Following the sentencing, law enforcement reminded the public that individuals who have experienced similar abuse are encouraged to come forward and seek support. The victims' statements expressed feelings of reliving their trauma, with one saying that Paterson’s actions have sentenced her to a lifetime of suffering. Authorities emphasized the availability of support services and urged victims to report any abuse.
