MAN HAS BEEN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY MORE THAN 45 YEARS LATER
At Teesside Crown Court, Judge Paul Reid heard how Mark Coupland, 63, had caused a boy, now 55, to become a lifelong recluse by turning him from a once bright and lively youth into a withdrawn individual. The court was told that Coupland’s threats and bullying tactics kept the victim too fearful to speak out for over forty years.
Coupland, a resident of Middlesbrough, strongly denied any wrongdoings but was nonetheless sentenced to three and a half years following convictions for gross indecency and indecent assault involving a child under the age of 14.
The judge remarked that Coupland’s actions had profoundly damaged the victim’s life.
He explained that prior to being convicted, Coupland was considered to have good character, but the abuse led the victim to become socially isolated and suicidal, with memories of the abuse frequently troubling him.
The court heard that the victim, who feared strangers and felt unable to reveal what had happened, endured this trauma for more than four decades.
The psychological impact of Coupland’s threats was severe, and the victim’s life was ultimately “shattered” by the abuse.
According to the victim’s own words, he was transformed from an energetic and talented boy into someone overwhelmed by fear and trauma, the court noted.
Despite his conviction, Coupland maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
The court explained that, owing to the restrictions on sentencing for youth offenders at that time, he could have received only two years of detention plus two years of training.
In addition, Coupland must be registered as a sex offender for life.
