BROMSGROVE SEX OFFENDER MELVYN BANNER SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR ABUSING YOUNG GIRLS IN BROMSGROVE
In a case that has shocked the community of Bromsgrove, Melvyn Banner, a 42-year-old man from Bishop Hall Crescent, has been handed down a severe prison sentence of 15 years following a series of disturbing sexual offences committed against young girls over a span of four years.Banner's conviction was secured after a jury at Worcester Crown Court reached a unanimous verdict on December 18.
The court heard harrowing details of how Banner had exploited two young girls over a period of three years, subjecting them to repeated abuse that has left lasting scars.
The investigation into Banner’s actions was initiated after one of the victims bravely reported her ordeal to the police.
During the course of the inquiry, the second girl also came forward, providing crucial disclosures that helped build the case against him.
The evidence presented in court painted a disturbing picture of a man who preyed on vulnerable minors, with authorities emphasizing the danger he posed.
Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins QC, in delivering the sentence, ordered Banner to register as a sex offender for life.
Additionally, he imposed a sex offences prevention order that prohibits Banner from having any contact with individuals under the age of 18 for the remainder of his life.
These measures are designed to protect the community and prevent any further harm.
DC Matt Skelton, who was involved in the investigation, described Banner as an “exceptionally dangerous individual who preyed on vulnerable young girls.” He expressed relief that Banner would be incarcerated for a significant portion of his life, ensuring he cannot commit further offences.
Skelton also praised the bravery of the victims, acknowledging that their courage in coming forward was instrumental in securing the conviction.
He highlighted the importance of their testimony in achieving justice and hoped that the resolution would help them begin to rebuild their lives.
Earlier, in November 2014, Banner was found guilty on multiple charges, including five counts of raping a child under 13, three counts of raping an adult, one count of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one count of sexual assault on a 13-year-old.
Despite denying all allegations, claiming they were fabricated, Banner was remanded in custody while awaiting sentencing and probation reports.
Judge Pearce-Higgins had warned him that a substantial sentence was imminent, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the community’s need for justice.
