CAERPHILLY MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ASSAULT
LAW enforcement officials have unveiled an image of Matthew Cripps, a repeat domestic abuse offender serving a decade-long sentence after assaulting his partner by damaging her eye socket and nose.A judge condemned the attack as brutal, heartless, and cruel.
During the incident, the 41-year-old from Caerphilly forced an unopened lager can into her face, while also punching, stamping, and strangling her.
The assault was fueled by drugs and alcohol, and the victim feared for her life.
Cripps, who has prior convictions including stalking and assault, received a 10-year extended sentence at Newport Crown Court.
Judge Richard Williams described the attack as particularly ruthless.
Prosecutor Megan Jones explained that the couple had been together for about six months, and the violence erupted after a friend visiting the defendant was told not to speak to her in such a manner.
Following a scuffle which resulted in Cripps losing a tooth, he called police to remove the guest.
He then destroyed a television by punching it and subsequently grabbed the complainant, throwing her to the ground.
He proceeded to push a full can of lager into her face, punch her nose, and kick her ribs.
The victim told the court she experienced extreme pain and terror, fearing he would kill her.
She lost consciousness and could not recall the event until waking the next day, with her injuries having been deliberately concealed.
In a victim impact statement, she expressed fear that, despite being in prison, Cripps is still trying to contact her and remains dangerous.
Cripps, of Llys Nant Pandy, pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm with intent, criminal damage, and battery.
His sentence consists of six years in prison plus four years on extended licence, with a minimum of four years to serve before potential parole.
An indefinite restraining order has also been imposed.
