HORWICH MAN MATTHEW BAILEY SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND VIOLENCE TOWARD 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In August 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Matthew Bailey, a man from Horwich, who engaged in a deeply troubling and abusive relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Despite being repeatedly warned about her age, Bailey continued to pursue and maintain a sexual relationship with her, demonstrating a blatant disregard for her youth and safety. The relationship reportedly began through exchanges of messages via text and social media platforms. Initially, the interactions included innocent gestures such as kissing and cuddling, but over time, the relationship escalated into sexual activity. The court heard that Bailey, aged 22 at the time, became increasingly controlling and possessive as the relationship progressed.
Bailey's behavior was characterized by jealousy and anger, especially when the girl did not answer her phone or spent time with boys her own age. His controlling tendencies soon turned violent, with the court revealing that he assaulted the girl on at least three separate occasions. Despite these violent episodes, Bailey would often reconcile with her after apologizing, further demonstrating his manipulative and abusive nature.
The girl, in an effort to protect herself, devised a system with a friend to alert her if she was in danger. She would send a message containing a number between zero and ten, with ten indicating that Bailey was being violent and that she needed help. This indicates the level of fear and danger she felt during their interactions.
Bailey’s arrest followed reports of his abusive behavior to the police. During police interviews, he claimed to believe the girl was older—around 16 or 17—based on her behavior and demeanor. However, the court noted that Bailey had been warned multiple times about her true age, including when her parents eventually discovered the relationship.
At the sentencing hearing, Bailey, who appeared via video link from prison, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of engaging a child in sexual activity, three counts of assault by battery, and one count of theft. Judge Richard Gioserano sentenced him to a total of 41 months in prison. The judge also emphasized Bailey’s jealousy, temper issues, and controlling behavior, describing his continued relationship with the girl as an abuse of power even after knowing her age.
Furthermore, Bailey was prohibited from working with children and was subjected to a restraining order that will last for five years. The court’s decision underscores the severity of his actions and the ongoing threat he poses to the safety of minors in the Horwich area.
