DOMESTIC ABUSE MAN SPENDS BIRTHDAY BEHIND BARS AFTER BREACHING BAIL
A convicted domestic abuser, Martin McGhee, went to his ex-partner's house in breach of a court bail order to stay away — just days before he was due to be sentenced.McGhee, 44, spent his birthday behind bars after a sheriff remanded him in custody for flouting the court directive not to approach or contact the woman.
On March 22, he went to her Greenock home after being found guilty at trial of threatening or abusive behaviour, acting aggressively, and climbing into her property through a window.
He has prior convictions for assaulting the woman and another for domestic abuse.
Prosecutor Mark Nicol described that when the witness returned to the house, the accused was there, asleep on a couch.
The woman testified that she was so terrified during a prior bust-up that she wet herself, and she recounted an incident where McGhee pushed her against the wall at the top of her stairs, causing her to panic.
A friend of the woman said she received a series of phone calls from her during the incident, with her sounding hysterical and terrified.
McGhee appeared in court from custody to plead guilty to the bail breach through lawyer Aidan Gallagher, who noted that alcohol was a common factor in both parties' cases.
Sheriff Andrew McIntyre deferred sentencing until Wednesday, when McGhee will also be sentenced for the original trial offences.
