GREENOCK MAN GETS COMMUNITY ORDER AFTER VIOLENT ASSAULT ON PARTNER
A WOMAN'S terrified screams prompted worried neighbours to contact police as her partner 'dragged her from room to room' during a violent assault in Greenock, a court has heard.Callum O’Hagan attacked the woman following an argument at a flat in the town on August 11, 2024.
He seized her and dragged her by the wrists, before repeatedly slapping and punching her on the head.
O’Hagan, 20, also threw a bag filled with cosmetics at her during the assault.
After she indicated she wished to end the relationship and asked O’Hagan to leave, he punched her in the face.
The woman fell to the floor, where she was continually kicked as she lay on the ground.
The court heard O’Hagan then pulled on her clothing so hard that he snapped her bra in two.
Concerned neighbours alerted police after overhearing her screams.
When officers arrived at the address, O’Hagan had his partner pinned up against a wall with his forearm to her neck.
She was struggling to speak due to the pressure on her.
O’Hagan admitted his guilt to the assault charge at Greenock Sheriff Court earlier this year and returned to the dock this week for sentencing.
Defence solicitor Gerry Keenan noted that a background report prepared by social workers had identified several appropriate community-based sentences.
Sheriff Anthony McGeehan condemned O'Hagan's actions in 'dragging' his partner from 'room to room' during the terrifying assault.
He said: “I want to make it clear, you have committed a serious offence.” The sheriff noted that sentencing guidelines indicated rehabilitation must be the main focus in sentencing a person of O’Hagan’s age.
He added: “That guideline might be described as the primary driver in my first approach to this case.
O’Hagan, of Marloch Avenue, was given a community payback order as a direct alternative to a custodial sentence.
He will be required to undertake 300 hours of unpaid work and will remain under social work supervision for the next two years.
Sheriff McGeehan also ordered him to adhere to a nightly curfew for 10 months, with his compliance being monitored through an electronic tag.
O’Hagan was further warned against approaching or contacting the woman as the sheriff made a three-year non-harassment order.
