OBAN MAN JAILED FOR AMASSING ONE OF SCOTLAND'S LARGEST CHILD PORN COLLECTIONS
A 57-year-old man named Martin Blyth from Ardconnel Terrace, Oban, has been sentenced for possessing an extensive collection of indecent images and videos involving children being sexually abused. The collection was described as one of the largest uncovered in Scotland, consisting of nearly half a million still pictures and over a thousand videos, with a significant portion categorized as the highest level of depravity.
The images included children as young as five years old being raped, forced to perform sexual acts with animals, and being tied up and abused.
The police took three months to grade the materials and found the collection "sickening".
Blyth had admitted to possessing the material between December 13, 2010, and May 18 of the previous year while living in Edinburgh.
The sheriff described Blyth's extensive planning and compulsion, noting his routine of downloading these images early in the morning and rushing home from work to engage with the material.
Blyth, a married man with no children and no prior convictions, had previously pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
The sheriff emphasized the serious harm caused to child victims and highlighted Blyth's high risk of causing future harm.
Consequently, he was sentenced to five years in custody, with three years to be served and two under supervision on licence.
Blyth is now on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
His defense acknowledged his cooperation and engagement with support groups, but the court stressed the need to protect the public from his high risk of harm.
