MARK DUTHIE SENTENCED IN MONTROSE FOR HORRIFIC CRIMES OVER 15 YEARS

A man named Mark Duthie has been handed down a severe nine-year prison sentence after a lengthy series of serious criminal offenses spanning over a decade and a half. The 33-year-old offender, whose criminal activities primarily took place in Montrose and surrounding areas, was responsible for targeting seven women through a range of heinous acts including rape, assault, abduction, and other forms of physical violence.

His criminal behavior reportedly began when he was just 16 years old. One of his earliest known incidents involved kicking a pregnant woman in the stomach, an act that demonstrated a disturbing pattern of violence from a young age. Over the years, Duthie’s offenses escalated in severity and frequency. In 2003, he was convicted of holding a woman down and raping her inside her home in Forfar. This incident marked a significant point in his criminal history, which would continue to include multiple acts of sexual violence and physical assault.

Eight years after the Forfar incident, Duthie committed another grave offense in Montrose, where he assaulted and raped a woman at her residence. Witnesses and victims reported that he attacked her while she was either asleep or unconscious, and in some cases, he physically assaulted women by punching them in the head. His violent acts extended beyond sexual assault, including kicking a pregnant woman in Brechin, and engaging in acts of abduction by locking victims inside houses. There were also reports of him throttling women in towns such as Montrose and Arbroath, further illustrating the extent of his violent tendencies.

The court heard that Duthie’s actions caused profound emotional and psychological trauma to his victims. During the sentencing, Lord Boyd of Duncansby emphasized the devastating impact of his crimes, stating that Duthie “appears to have no conception of the harm he inflicted.” The court convicted him on 28 charges, which covered offenses committed between January 2003 and January 2018. These charges included multiple counts of physical assault, sexual abuse, and other violent acts.

As part of his punishment, Duthie was sentenced to nine years in prison. Additionally, he will be subject to two years of supervised release following his incarceration. He will also be placed on an indefinite sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The police expressed their hope that this conviction would serve as a strong message against domestic abuse and violence, commending the bravery of the victims who came forward to testify. Authorities also reiterated their commitment to supporting victims and encouraging others to report abuse, emphasizing that no one should suffer in silence and that help is available for those in need.
