A 45-YEAR-OLD MAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON AFTER THE “CALLOUS AND CRUEL” MURDER OF HIS PARTNER.
Malcolm Cromie has been sentenced to a minimum of 18 years imprisonment for the homicide of Mahala Rhodes in West Yorkshire, before he becomes eligible for parole.During the sentencing, Judge Peter Benson characterized Cromie, who resides in Rooley Heights, Halifax, as a person who is manipulative and controlling.
He explained that Cromie told 19-year-old Connor Stephenson, Mahala Rhodes’ son, that his efforts to save his mother were futile.
The judge stated, “You callously and deliberately took the life of a loving and nurturing mother.” He further noted that Mahala Rhodes’ relationship with Cromie was unstable and marked by frequent disputes and violence.
Judge Benson mentioned that, according to evidence, Cromie was responsible for most of the arguments, although Connor acknowledged that sometimes Mahala initiated conflicts.
The judge also expressed his belief that Cromie suffered from paranoia, convinced that Mahala was unfaithful to him with drug dealers and plotting against him.
He added, “Despite no one supporting these accusations, you appeared determined to control your shared daughter, and in pursuit of this, you made malicious allegations and even threatened to kill her.” On the day Mahala Rhodes was murdered, the judge recounted, she was in good spirits, having recently acquired a new phone and engaged in online searches for fabrics and furnishings.
Just minutes after logging off at 5:45 pm, Cromie fatally stabbed her and then inflicted five stab wounds on himself in the chest and abdomen.
Cromie falsely claimed that Mahala had threatened him with a knife, but Judge Benson believed this was untrue and concluded Cromie was responsible for his own injuries.
Referring to a statement from Mahala’s mother, Angela Scott, the judge described Mahala as a caring mother who worked hard to raise her children under difficult circumstances.
He praised Connor for his dignified testimony and emphasized that no penalty can undo the pain felt by her family.
In a family statement, Mahala Rhodes was remembered as a loving mother, daughter, sister, cousin, and friend, who was deeply loved.
The family expressed their devastation and sorrow over her loss, lamenting that her children should not have to grow up without their mother’s presence at holidays.
Detective Inspector Paul Conroy from West Yorkshire Police commented that Mahala’s family has been profoundly affected by her death, and he hoped the life sentence for Cromie would bring them some closure to begin grieving anew.
