MIDDLESBROUGH MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING WIFE AFTER INTERNET DISPUTE
A husband named Mahmoud Al-Omer was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court for physically assaulting and intentionally strangling his wife.
The incident occurred after she asked him to turn on the internet so she could contact family and friends abroad.
According to court reports, Al-Omer 'flew into a rage' over this request and assaulted her, leaving her terrified.
He punched and strangled her on three separate occasions, during which she struggled to breathe and believed he had threatened to kill her.
Police were called to his home in Middlesbrough just after 10 pm on June 28 of the previous year, where they found the woman distressed and children present.
Despite his previous good character and arriving in the UK fleeing conflict in Syria, the judge described him as a 'danger to the public' and sentenced him to 19 months in prison.
The judge emphasized the severity of the assault, stating, 'When a man strangles a woman he literally takes her life in his hands,' and condemned his repeated acts as 'deplorable.'
