LORRAINE EDGE SHOCKS RUNCORN WITH SEX ASSAULTS ON YOUNG BOY
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Runcorn, Lorraine Edge, a 36-year-old woman, has admitted to committing serious sexual offenses against a young boy. The incidents occurred during visits to her residence, and the details emerged during a court hearing at Warrington Crown Court.According to court reports, Edge held the boy's hands behind his back and indecently assaulted him on two separate occasions. The abuse was uncovered after the boy became visibly distressed at the thought of visiting her again, raising concerns among family members and prompting police intervention.
Prosecutor Lewis Jones outlined that the offenses took place over a period stretching from September of the previous year to March of the current year. During this time, Edge engaged in acts that involved physically restraining the boy and subjecting him to indecent assault. When questioned by authorities, Edge admitted to the assaults but claimed they were in response to the boy's own behavior, specifically his tickling and slapping her bottom.
Edge's defense attorney, Simon Berkson, emphasized her mental capacity, describing her as not being the most intelligent individual. He pointed out that the offenses were not part of a pattern of persistent abuse and occurred some time apart. Berkson also highlighted that Edge had no prior criminal record and that her family continued to support her despite the allegations.
The court proceedings revealed that both incidents took place after Edge had given birth to her daughter. The child had been underweight and required hospital treatment, leading to regular contact with Social Services regarding her care. This context added a layer of concern about the overall well-being of the child and the environment in which the offenses occurred.
Judge Philip Hughes addressed Edge directly, expressing his understanding of the distress caused to the young victim. He stated, “It’s obvious this little boy was distressed by this. Quite how much is, at this stage, impossible for me to know. But you have serious problems as regards your inadequacy to care for your own child so I am giving you a special chance.”
As a result of her guilty pleas, Edge was sentenced to a two-year probation period and was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years, marking a significant step in addressing her actions and the safety of the community.
