HALIFAX MAN JAILED FOR MANSLAUGHTER AFTER THROWING PHONE IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE
Lloyd Birkby, aged 27 and from Elland in West Yorkshire, has received a five-year prison sentence after admitting to manslaughter in connection with Levi Ogden's death. The fatal event happened in Halifax in November following a heated dispute, during which Birkby grabbed a mobile phone discarded on the ground and threw it forcefully at Ogden from approximately six to eight feet away.
The blow inflicted a brain hemorrhage on Ogden, leading to cardiac arrest after she staggered and collapsed on the street.
Ogden, who was a mother of two children, was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The court proceedings revealed that Birkby had a lengthy history of domestic violence, including multiple prison terms for assault, and police had been called to their residence roughly twenty times.
Prosecutor Dafydd Enoch QC described the case as a 'tragic, violent incident' that was recorded on CCTV footage, which occurred after an argument during a night out in Halifax.
Judge Geoffrey Marson QC commented that Birkby 'poses a significant risk of harm to future intimate partners.'
