JAIL FOR CAMBRIDGE STALKER WHO SET EX'S CAR ON FIRE AND THREATENED TO 'MUTILATE HER FOR LIFE'
A Cambridge man, Liviu Groparu, 38, has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment after admitting to stalking his ex-girlfriend through threatening messages and the arson of her vehicle.Groparu, residing on Peveral Road, systematically deceived the woman into believing she was under attack by strangers.
Following their breakup in November 2022, she began to receive multiple threatening messages from different unknown numbers and social media accounts.
The victim’s parents also fell victim to the harassment, receiving an anonymous abusive message about their daughter.
Groparu further contacted them by phone, expressing concern for her safety and warning of potential harm from ‘dangerous people.’ On December 8, around 5:30 pm, while the victim was at her residence, she received a message urging her to go outside for a surprise.
Simultaneously, Groparu called to ask if she or her car was harmed, claiming that he had received a message indicating she had a surprise on her car.
When she stepped outside, she found her tires had been slashed.
A few days thereafter, she received an anonymous message claiming she had destroyed Groparu’s life, and the warning about the tire incident was followed by a threat to burn her car without hesitation if police involvement occurred.
Additional threats appeared in messages to her parents, stating their daughter would be “mutilated for life” and that “no one would love her anymore.” Later that day, her brother contacted her to inform her that he had received a message stating her car was on fire.
The victim saw firefighters extinguishing flames from her vehicle in a nearby parking lot.
Police investigations linked Groparu to all the anonymous communications and the arson.
Despite denying charges of stalking, arson, and criminal damage, he was found guilty on all counts after a trial held earlier this year.
He was sentenced at Huntingdon Law Courts to serve three years, along with a five-year restraining order.
Detective Sergeant Kenny Reeves noted: “Groparu’s actions caused significant fear for his former partner.
His manipulative behavior and relentless harassment led to a traumatic experience for her and her loved ones.
Stalking remains a serious offense that can leave victims feeling isolated and frightened, and these actions exemplify the damaging effects such behaviors can have.”
