KENDAL SEX OFFENDER LEON LEWIS JAILED FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH NOTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A sex offender named Leon Lewis, aged 36, from Highgate, Kendal, has once again been sentenced to prison. The court heard that Lewis had previously served a 129-month sentence for serious sexual offenses involving children, including causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and for making and distributing indecent images of children.
After being released in August 2024, Lewis was added to the sex offenders register and instructed to report any changes in his personal details to the police within three days.
He was found to have committed an offense by failing to notify police about a new KIK messenger account named ‘Johnny01234321’ between May 31 and July 23.
Prosecutor Peter Kelly explained that law enforcement officers contacted Lewis after discovering the account, which was used on a mobile phone previously reported missing.
The court noted that the defendant behaved unmonitored and posed a risk of serious harm.
Lewis answered 'no comment' during police interviews.
Mr Kelly emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, stating, "The defendant was convicted in April 2019 for very serious sexual offenses involving children.
He served a 129-month sentence.
He has been fully recalled on this matter and may serve the remainder of his sentence.
He is a category one risk." Lewis admitted to failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders register when given the chance to do so.
In mitigation, Lewis’s lawyer, Lindsey Oldham, claimed that he was unaware of what KIK messenger was until she explained and that he did not remember downloading it due to a relapse with alcohol at the end of May.
She emphasized that this was his first breach and called for a short custodial sentence.
The magistrates expressed concern about the potential harm to children and sentenced Lewis to 30 weeks in jail, to run concurrently with his license recall.
They also ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £187 upon release.
