KEVIN REID OF GREENOCK SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN IN RENFREWSHIRE
In October 2021, a disturbing case involving Kevin Reid, a former police officer from Greenock, Renfrewshire, came to light as he was convicted of heinous sexual offenses against young boys. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of depraved behavior spanning over a decade, with Reid targeting children as young as six months old.
Reid, aged 54, was found guilty after a trial at Greenock’s sheriff court.
The allegations detailed a series of disturbing acts committed by Reid, who had previously served as a member of the Ministry of Defence police.
The conviction came after evidence was presented of his repeated abuse of multiple young boys over several years.
The court heard that Reid had targeted one boy over a two-year period starting in 2018, when the victim was only six years old.
Additionally, he preyed on another boy for a period of six years beginning in 2008.
A third innocent child was also victimized in 2018 when he was just nine years old.
The extent of Reid’s misconduct was described as deeply disturbing and morally reprehensible.
During the sentencing hearing on the Friday following his conviction, Reid continued to deny any wrongdoing.
His defense lawyer, Allan Macleod, expressed that the conviction had devastated Reid, emphasizing that he had lost his job and reputation as a result of the case.
Despite this, the victims’ families and the community expressed their anguish and concern.
The mother of one of Reid’s victims spoke openly about the ongoing impact of the abuse.
She stated, “My son is starting to heal but I worry about the untold damage as he matures.
The rest of the family is devastated with this.
The old analogy of the stone in a pond works well.
The ripple effect is felt by us all.
I currently live a torturous existence and I liken it to the worst thing that can happen to a parent apart from your child being murdered.” The court proceedings detailed the specific acts committed by Reid.
He was convicted of exposing his buttocks to one boy and making sexual remarks towards him on multiple occasions between May 2008 and November 2010, when the boy was between ten and twelve years old.
Further, Reid engaged in humiliating and alarming behavior, directing sexual comments towards the same boy from December 2010 to May 2011, and continued this pattern until May 2014, including inducing the boy to watch pornography and exposing his own naked buttock.
Reid’s misconduct extended beyond verbal abuse.
He threatened violence on one occasion by shouting and banging doors to instill fear.
The most disturbing aspect involved his targeting of a six-year-old child, whom he chased into a toilet and refused to let leave, during the period from January 2018 to October 2019.
The court described these acts as depraved and humiliating, with details too grotesque to be included in a family publication.
Furthermore, Reid was found guilty of threatening and abusive behavior towards a third boy aged between nine and ten.
This included exposing his buttocks and private parts during the same period.
The court noted that Reid, who had previously worked as a butcher and taxi driver, arrived at the court on the day of sentencing puffing on a vape device, dressed in a sharp grey three-piece suit with a white shirt and lilac tie.
He attempted to cover his face upon seeing a photographer and then donned a black mask before entering the courthouse.
Sheriff Hall deferred sentencing until October 29 to consider the Crown’s motion and remanded Reid in custody in the meantime.
Throughout the proceedings, Reid showed no emotion as he was cuffed and taken to the cells, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the serious consequences he now faces.
