2003: MAN WHO HARASSED HIS MOTHER IS JAILED
Kevin O'Neill, who harassed his mother at her Hereford flat and committed a burglary there, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.According to evidence presented in Worcester Crown Court, O'Neill was dealing with serious mental health problems alongside a crack-cocaine addiction.
At the time the crimes occurred, he was under supervision from both probation and mental health services in Hereford, operating under a community rehabilitation order.
The presiding judge, Michael Mott, commended those who had attempted to rehabilitate O'Neill but noted that drug abuse has often obstructed efforts to help individuals like him.
He mentioned that O'Neill only began to abstain from drugs while in custody on remand and that this has contributed to his renewed resolve not to relapse.
Addressing O'Neill directly, the judge stated, "You have mental health issues, but if you stayed off drugs, mental health professionals could better manage your condition and prevent these issues." O'Neill, 26, from Coningsby Street in Hereford, admitted to charges including burglary, theft, harassment, and threatening behavior.
Prosecutor Carol Knotts reported that O'Neill had repeatedly visited his mother’s flat demanding cash.
His conduct became hostile, and he took her credit card from a bedroom during one of these visits.
On October 12 last year, despite the property being secured, he forced entry through a bathroom window and stole a television and tobacco, totaling £79.
A month later, after being allowed to stay again, he stole her debit card and withdrew £400.
His criminal record includes prior offenses related to drugs, theft, and burglary.
Defense solicitor Samantha Powis shared that O'Neill suffers from schizophrenia, which hampers his ability to cope with everyday life.
"He targets his mother to get quick money for drugs," she explained.
"He is genuinely motivated to address his substance abuse now."
