KEVIN MELLORS SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN CAMBRIDGE FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Cambridge, Kevin Mellors, a 66-year-old man, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving a young girl.
The abuse, which spanned over three years, came to light only after the victim confided in close friends, revealing a pattern of sexual assault and rape that had been inflicted upon her between 2018 and 2020.
Kevin Mellors, who resides on Glenalmond Avenue in Cambridge, was initially arrested following the disclosure by the victim.
During police interviews, Mellors denied the allegations, asserting that he had no sexual attraction to children and claiming innocence.
Despite his denials, the evidence presented at trial painted a starkly different picture.
The case proceeded to a nine-day trial at Cambridge Crown Court in April, where the jury found Mellors guilty of multiple serious charges.
These included the rape of a girl under the age of 13, as well as two counts of sexually assaulting a girl under 13 through penetration.
The severity of the crimes and the betrayal of trust involved in abusing a minor prompted the court to impose a significant sentence.
On Thursday, the judge sentenced Mellors to 14 years in prison, with an additional year on license.
The court also ordered that he serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Furthermore, Mellors was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
He was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect indefinitely, aimed at protecting the public from any potential future harm.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the critical role that victims' confidences play in uncovering abuse.
The community of Cambridge is left to grapple with the gravity of the crimes committed by Kevin Mellors, whose actions have caused lasting trauma to the young girl involved.
