RAPIST'S APPEAL FAILS
A Dorset man who rendered two women unconscious before subjecting them to the degrading ordeal of recording himself inflicting a range of sexual indignities failed in an Appeal Court bid to clear his name.Kevin James Brady, 49, of Palmerston Road, Upton, Poole, was convicted of one count of rape and five counts of indecent assaults at Winchester Crown Court on October 15, 1999.
The following day it emerged that he had pleaded guilty to a string of offences involving young children after he rigged up a covert recording unit in his house, allowing him to watch live footage of young children going to the toilet.
On February 18 last year, he was sentenced to 11 years for the rape and indecent assaults and a further 18 months for one count of indecency with a child and 10 of taking indecent photographs.
Lord Justice Rose, sitting at London's Criminal Appeal Court, rejected submissions from Brady's lawyers that he had been denied a fair trial because the video evidence of one woman was used to support the charges relating to the other woman.
The court heard how Brady met his first victim, following the death of his first wife in 1991.
The first victim described her non-sexual relationship with him as being that of "a shoulder to cry on and nothing more".
But she complained to her sister that she thought she had been indecently touched by Brady.
It was that same year that Brady met a heroin-addicted Plymouth prostitute.
She said she considered him to be a friend before she discovered a video that included footage of Brady raping her without her knowledge.
Refusing to grant Brady permission to challenge his sentence, Lord Justice Rose said: "There is no doubt that the total sentence which the learned judge imposed was a severe one and there is no doubt that these activities merited a severe sentence."
