LOWESTOFT DOG OWNER KELLY UTTING AND DANIEL KILTY SENTENCED FOR STARVING MINIATURE DACHSHUND TO DEATH

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Lowestoft, Kelly Utting, born around 1987, and Daniel Kilty, born October 1982, residents of 2 Magnolia Court, were found guilty of neglecting their pet, a miniature dachshund named Duggy, leading to the animal's tragic death. The heartbreaking incident came to light in December 2023 when a concerned family member, witnessing the dire condition of Duggy, took the dog to a local veterinarian. Despite urgent medical attention, the vet was unable to save Duggy, who was immediately euthanized to alleviate his suffering.

Following this distressing event, the RSPCA launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Duggy’s death. Their inquiries led them directly to the residence of Utting and Kilty in Lowestoft. It was revealed that the couple, who are parents to six children, failed to appear at their scheduled court hearing. Despite their absence, the court found them guilty in their absence of neglecting their pet’s basic needs and failing to provide adequate care.

Expert veterinary reports presented during the trial detailed the severe condition of Duggy. The veterinarian stated that Duggy had suffered immensely due to his emaciated state. The report described how the dog’s suffering manifested through extreme weakness, fatigue, general malaise, and an inability to tolerate physical activity, ultimately leading to his collapse. The veterinarian emphasized that the neglect was evident and that Duggy’s needs had not been met in accordance with good animal welfare practices. The report further criticized the couple for not seeking prompt veterinary advice when Duggy’s health was clearly deteriorating, thereby failing to prevent his suffering.

RSPCA Inspector Emily Astillbery, who was involved in the investigation, recounted her emotional response upon seeing photographs and a video of Duggy. She described the dog as one of the thinnest she had ever encountered, with every rib and vertebra prominently visible. Duggy’s hips and pelvic bones were protruding sharply beneath his skin, a sight that was both heartbreaking and shocking. Inspector Astillbery noted that such extreme weight loss could not have occurred overnight, indicating prolonged neglect.

In the courtroom, the judge sentenced Utting and Kilty to a fine of £1,100. Additionally, they were ordered to pay £1,081 in legal costs and a victim surcharge of £440. As part of their punishment, the couple was also banned from owning any animals for a period of ten years, a ban that will remain in effect until February 2035. The case has sparked widespread concern about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners in the Lowestoft area.
