BRIDLINGTON CHILD RAPIST KARL RUGG SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE
In December 2018, a devastating case unfolded in Hull Crown Court involving Karl Rugg, a 54-year-old man from Bridlington, who was convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of three young girls. The court heard harrowing details of Rugg’s actions, which spanned over a period of time and inflicted lasting trauma on his victims.Rugg was found guilty on multiple counts, including three charges of rape, three attempted rapes, five indecent assaults, two sexual assaults of a child under 13, and two additional offences related to sexual activity with a minor. Despite his conviction, Rugg continued to maintain his innocence, protesting throughout the trial, which lasted ten days. The jury’s verdict, however, was clear, and he was sentenced to a lengthy term of 22 years in prison. The judge, Mark Bury, explicitly stated that Rugg might serve the entire sentence unless the parole board determines it is safe to release him earlier.
As Rugg left the courtroom, the emotional impact on his victims was palpable. They sobbed openly in the public gallery, embracing each other in relief and sorrow upon hearing the judge’s decision to imprison their tormentor for over two decades. The court also addressed allegations that Rugg had raped one of the victims while she was pregnant, a charge for which he was never formally charged but for which the judge expressed confidence based on the evidence presented.
Judge Bury did not hold back in his condemnation of Rugg’s character, describing him as a “selfish, arrogant, manipulative paedophile.” He contrasted Rugg’s demeanor with the dignity shown by the victims during their testimonies, emphasizing the stark difference in their conduct. The judge also criticized Rugg for having “corrupted” the girls and for having “blighted their lives,” adding that he showed no remorse or concern for the damage he caused.
The court heard powerful victim statements, including a 45-minute video recording made with a police officer, which revealed the depth of the trauma endured. One victim recounted her struggles with mental health, including an attempt to take her own life as a young girl, which was only thwarted by a relative who intervened by cutting a tie from around her neck. She described how the abuse had left her with no qualifications, unable to form normal relationships, and suffering from self-harm, anxiety, and depression. She expressed her fear of the upcoming trial, feeling that no one would believe her, and described the emotional toll of recounting her experiences in court.
Another victim shared her ongoing battle with happiness, describing feelings of heaviness and despair, while a third expressed relief and a sense of closure after the guilty verdicts. The victims’ ages ranged from five to fifteen at the time of the abuse, highlighting the devastating impact Rugg’s actions had on their lives.
During the proceedings, a comment was made by an adult calling one of the victims “a disgrace to society,” but Judge Bury responded sharply, stating that if anyone wanted to see a disgrace, they should look in the mirror. As part of his sentence, Rugg was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Rugg’s address was noted as Prickett Road, Bridlington, and his conviction marks a significant moment in the ongoing fight against child sexual abuse in the region. The case has left a lasting scar on the community, and the court’s decision aims to serve justice for the young victims who endured unimaginable suffering at his hands.
