CHELMSFORD POLICE OFFICER JONATHAN MAWSON FIRED OVER MISCONDUCT TOWARD WOMEN
Jonathan Mawson, a police officer with a notable history of courageous acts, has been dismissed from Essex Police following allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards women. Mawson, who was previously celebrated for heroic deeds such as rescuing a woman from a burning vehicle and saving a man from the sea, faced serious misconduct charges that ultimately led to his removal from the force. The incident in question took place during a social gathering in Chelmsford in February 2022. It was reported that Mawson engaged in inappropriate touching of a woman, an act that caused her significant distress and discomfort. The allegations were taken seriously by the authorities, and Mawson was summoned to face a misconduct hearing to address the accusations.
During the proceedings, Mawson denied the allegations, asserting that he did not touch the woman or act without her consent. He maintained his innocence both in court and at the misconduct hearing, claiming that his actions were misinterpreted or exaggerated. Despite his previous commendations and reputation for bravery, the evidence and testimonies presented during the hearing led to a different conclusion.
The misconduct hearing was held at Chelmsford Civic Centre and was chaired by Assistant Chief Constable Lucy Morris. After careful consideration of the evidence, the panel found Mawson guilty of gross misconduct. The decision was clear: his behaviour was unacceptable and fell well below the standards expected of a police officer. As a result, Mawson was dismissed from the force with immediate effect, without notice.
Assistant Chief Constable Lucy Morris emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity and professionalism within the police force. She stated that such behaviour not only damages individual trust but also undermines public confidence in law enforcement. Morris reiterated Essex Police’s commitment to eradicating misogyny and ensuring that women are treated with respect and dignity. She urged members of the public to report any misconduct early, to help uphold the force’s standards and protect vulnerable individuals.
During the hearing, Mawson’s legal representative argued that he was 'one of the good guys,' highlighting his past acts of bravery and service. However, the panel concluded that the severity of his actions warranted his dismissal, reflecting the force’s strict standards for conduct and the importance of accountability. The case serves as a reminder that even officers with distinguished records are held to high standards of behaviour, and misconduct will be met with appropriate disciplinary action.
