JONATHAN HOWARD OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES IN KENT
In a case that has spanned nearly two decades, a man from Tunbridge Wells, Jonathan Howard, has been convicted and sentenced for serious child sexual offences.The allegations against Howard, who resides on Huntingdon Avenue in Tunbridge Wells, first emerged in April of the previous year, prompting immediate police action.
Howard, aged 59 at the time of his arrest, was taken into custody on the very day the accusations were publicly made.
The police investigation uncovered that the offences occurred between March and June of 2001, a period over 20 years prior to his arrest.
Despite the lengthy passage of time, the authorities acted swiftly once the allegations surfaced, demonstrating their commitment to addressing historic abuse cases.
During the court proceedings, Howard pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault related to the incidents from 2001.
These assaults involved a minor and had a profound impact on the victim’s life.
The court, however, found no sufficient evidence to proceed with two additional charges of indecent assault, which the judge ordered to remain on file, meaning they could potentially be considered in future proceedings if new evidence emerges.
Judge Julian Smith presided over the case and delivered the sentence on a Friday.
He sentenced Howard to three years and four months in prison, emphasizing the severity of the crimes committed.
In his remarks, Judge Smith highlighted the lasting damage inflicted upon the victim, describing the impact as “lifelong and huge.” He further stated, “This has clearly been the cause of much anguish and distress in their life.
He does not have a complete comprehension of his actions or their impact.
He has failed on occasion to properly grasp and accept his culpability.” The judge’s comments underscore the gravity of Howard’s offences and the ongoing suffering endured by the victim, as well as the importance of holding offenders accountable regardless of the time elapsed since the crimes occurred.
