MIDDLESBROUGH MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT ON PARTNER

On Christmas Day in 2021, Jonathan Blyth was involved in a violent attack against his former partner.

The incident unfolded while Blyth, who had been consuming alcohol heavily since 11:30 am, became agitated over personal matters involving his previous relationship and his children.

He was staying at his girlfriend’s residence in Middlesbrough when she returned from visiting her mother and asked him to leave.

The situation then escalated into violence.

According to prosecutor Jenny Haigh, Blyth’s partner was cleaning up a spilled drink when he pinned her to the floor for about five minutes.

Although she initially believed he was joking, she eventually started crying and asked him to leave.

The assault intensified when Blyth grabbed a table leg and hurled it across the room, striking her.

She managed to call a friend, who arrived and told Blyth to leave.

In response, Blyth picked up a glass used as an ashtray and threw it at the back of her head, causing it to break and inflicting a deep cut.

The victim fled the scene and contacted police, reporting ongoing pain and shooting sensations in the back of her head.

Blyth, who resides in Coris Close, Marton, pleaded guilty to charges of wounding his ex-partner and criminal damage.

He had a significant criminal history, with 24 previous convictions covering 40 offenses, including four assaults, one of which involved a police officer.

He was sentenced to 14 months in prison, and a five-year restraining order was also issued to prevent contact with his former partner.

Initially denying the charges, Blyth changed his plea to guilty on the day his trial was scheduled to start at Teesside Crown Court.

During proceedings, mitigation was discussed, highlighting Blyth’s emotional struggles and difficulty controlling his anger.

The court recognized the seriousness of the injuries inflicted, including a laceration and persistent pain.

The incident was documented during the court case, and Blyth is anticipated to serve time in prison.

The sentence underscores the severity of his actions and the court’s concern over his pattern of violence.
