GRIMSBY PREDATOR JOHN WALSHAW JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In December 2017, a disturbing case unfolded in Grimsby involving a 56-year-old man named John Walshaw, who was convicted of engaging in inappropriate and illegal conduct with a teenage girl. The incident came to light after concerned friends of the girl, who was only 15 years old at the time, witnessed a troubling scene in an alleyway and promptly alerted authorities.
According to reports, Walshaw was found in close proximity to the young girl, with her pajamas and underwear pulled down, indicating that he was on the verge of sexual contact.
The girl, who was described as vulnerable and in the care of a children's home, was seen holding a bottle of wine and walking hand-in-hand with Walshaw.
Her friends, who had been following her, became alarmed when they saw her kissing Walshaw and engaging in what was described as a prolonged snogging session lasting approximately five minutes.
The friends' concerns grew when they observed the girl and Walshaw behind some bushes, with her clothing visibly disheveled.
They recognized that Walshaw was significantly older than the girl and questioned her about her relationship with him.
Although she claimed that Walshaw was her uncle, her friends were skeptical of this explanation.
One of the friends directly confronted Walshaw, telling him, “you’re a paedo,” and making it clear that the girl was only 15 years old.
Her friends' vigilance prompted them to notify staff at the children's home, leading to police involvement.
Walshaw was quickly arrested nearby the scene.
The police investigation revealed that Walshaw had a history of criminal convictions, including a seven-year prison sentence in 1992 for rape and a nine-month sentence in 1989 for indecent assault, totaling 55 previous convictions.
During the court proceedings, Michael Morley, the prosecutor, detailed the events and emphasized the girl's living situation at the time.
Walshaw admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a child and attempted sexual activity on July 29.
His defense, represented by Gordon Stables, argued that Walshaw was unaware of the girl’s status in care and her age until her friends started shouting at him.
Stables also noted that Walshaw had been drinking, which impaired his judgment and decision-making.
Judge Mark McKone addressed Walshaw directly, highlighting the vulnerability of the girl and the seriousness of his actions.
He pointed out that Walshaw’s failure to heed the warnings about her age demonstrated a reckless disregard for her safety.
The judge sentenced Walshaw to two years in prison, imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, and mandated that he register as a sex offender for a decade.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action when it comes to protecting minors from predatory behavior, especially in cases where individuals with a history of sexual offenses target vulnerable young people in communities like Grimsby.
