JOHN SHUTT'S HORRIFIC COLLECTION IN MIDDLESBROUGH REVEALED

In a disturbing case uncovered on Teesside, John Thomas Shutt, a resident of Middlesbrough, was found to have accumulated one of the most extensive and grotesque collections of child abuse images ever discovered in the area. Over a span of four years, Shutt meticulously built and organized a personal library containing more than 33,000 illicit images and videos, many of which depicted the most severe and degrading forms of abuse inflicted upon children.

During a court hearing at Teesside Crown Court, it was revealed that Shutt, aged 57, had downloaded and stored these disturbing materials from the internet, copying them onto CDs and DVDs for his own gratification. The authorities also discovered that he had created a portable collection of at least 200 8mm films by recording his computer screen while perverted movies played, indicating a systematic and highly organized approach to his illicit collection.

The presiding judge, Recorder Michael Slater, reviewed some of the images and made a stark statement about the nature of Shutt’s collection. He described it as being amassed over a significant period, emphasizing that Shutt was an enthusiastic and active collector of such material, which he stored carefully for personal pleasure. The images, numbering over 30,000, included photographs and videos of children subjected to varying degrees of sexual abuse. The most severe images depicted the most horrendous acts, and the court was told that all of these children were real victims who had been forced into these situations.

Judge Slater highlighted the brutal reality that these children, some as young as four, had been exploited and forced to pose in these degrading scenarios. The judge underscored that these images were not just digital files but representations of real children who endured unimaginable suffering, and that the existence of these images meant that these children had been victimized and possibly continue to suffer.

Following the evidence, Shutt was sentenced to 15 months in prison. The judge noted that, as a first-time offender with no prior convictions, a custodial sentence was inevitable. Prosecutor Harry Hadfield explained that Shutt’s actions were driven by an addiction to viewing such images, which provided him with sexual gratification. The police had conducted a search of Shutt’s home on Brettenham Avenue, Middlesbrough, on September 30, 2008. During the search, officers discovered two computer towers in his bedroom, along with a large collection of illicit materials including photographs, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, two digital cameras, a video camera, 8mm films, and pornographic magazines containing addresses of illegal websites.

Investigators identified a total of 33,049 images and videos depicting children, primarily girls aged between four and 15, engaged in sexual acts. Mr. Hadfield, a high-tech crime specialist for the Cleveland Crown Prosecution Service, explained that more than half of these images fell into the least serious legal category, but over 13,000 images were classified within the most severe categories, including more than 7,700 grotesque and degrading images at the two highest levels. He emphasized that this collection was among the largest of its kind ever seized by Cleveland Police, particularly for the most serious categories.

The timeline of Shutt’s collection spanned from March 2004 to September 2008. He was known to frequently visit pornographic websites and manipulate images to impose his own modifications. Additionally, he possessed 786 images of extreme adult pornography, which are now classified as illegal. When questioned by police, Shutt admitted to owning the collection and expressed remorse, claiming that his actions were driven by boredom. He denied that he took the photos himself or that he intended to distribute them.

Shutt entered early guilty pleas to 18 charges—16 counts of making indecent images of children and two counts of possessing such images. His defense attorney, Duncan McReddie, described Shutt’s life as isolated and deteriorating, noting that he had been out of work for 16 months and had limited contact with his family, including his children and grandchildren. The lawyer stated that Shutt now fully understood the harm caused by his actions and recognized the grotesque and degrading nature of his behavior. He emphasized that Shutt had no interest in real children and that there would be no reversion to such conduct.

In sentencing, the judge referred to guidelines for possessing indecent images for personal use, clarifying that there was no evidence of trading or distribution. As part of his sentence, Shutt was issued a sexual offences prevention order and prohibited from working with children in the future, aiming to prevent any potential reoffending and protect vulnerable individuals from harm.
