ISLE OF WIGHT MAN ASSAULT EX AND SMASH-UP RECORDED
AN ISLE of Wight man who assaulted his ex-partner and recorded himself smashing up a vehicle she was in, posting the video on social media, has been sentenced.John Newton, of Oaklyn Gardens, Shanklin, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday, October 31.
At a previous hearing in August, the 38-year-old admitted possession of an offensive weapon, namely an extendable baton, criminal damage, and two counts of assault by beating, in Shanklin, between December 24, 2022, and May 28, 2024.
Prosecutor Lauren McConnell said the offences related to Newton’s ex-partner and followed the breakdown of their relationship.
The court heard Newton punched and kicked the van they were in and threw a concrete block at the front driver’s side of the vehicle.
The court also noted that Newton recorded himself and posted the video online.
Ms McConnell explained he was due to collect children on Christmas Eve 2022, but was late, and parked behind his victim to prevent her from leaving.
An argument ensued, and Newton produced a truncheon-like object, which he struck the car with, grazing the victim.
She felt Newton was remorseful afterward.
In May of the following year, there was another disagreement over child collection times, during which Newton threw a shoe at the victim's face.
The victim stated in court that these incidents made her anxious and nervous, and the online recording was 'life changing,' impacting her business and friendships, even making her feel like she didn't want to wake up.
Tom Cooke, defending, said there had been no offending since and they were doing well regarding contact.
Newton was sentenced to an 18-month community order, including 20 rehabilitation days, and a 24-month restraining order.
He was also fined £692, with £150 in costs and a £114 surcharge.
