MIDDLESBROUGH MAN CONVICTED OF ANIMAL CRUELTY AND AVOIDING COURT SENTENCING

John Michael Ginty, also known as the "Hemlington Cowboy," was convicted of animal cruelty after searches of his property in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, revealed numerous abuses involving animals. RSPCA inspectors found six dogs running loose in the backyard and a wild sparrowhawk tied up among them that was "obviously agitated and nervous". The bird had no access to water and was exposed to the elements. In addition, another lurcher was discovered with an injury to its leg, which had been caused by being caught on a barbed wire fence while out "lamping."Ginty and his partner, Nicola Bradley, were also accused of causing unnecessary suffering to a variety of animals. They kept a dog named Spike with a serious tail injury that later required amputation, and a Shih Tzu that needed its eye removed due to infection. Both Ginty and Bradley denied four charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, two of failing to ensure animal welfare, and one of possessing a wild bird, but they were ultimately convicted by the magistrates. The court was informed that the pair was arrested after two searches of Bradley's house—the first in March and another in August. Ginty claimed he found the sparrowhawk with "kids by a beck" and took it into his care, also expressing that he did not realize the Shih Tzu’s eye was in such bad condition because of its long fur. Bradley, 25, from Dalwood Court, Hemlington, chose not to give evidence during the trial. In sentencing, Bradley was given a 12-month community order with 20 days of rehabilitation and costs of PS500. The court banned her from owning, keeping, or caring for animals for ten years, a ban that cannot be lifted for at least five years. Six dogs will be rehomed by the RSPCA, and the sparrowhawk was released back into the wild. Ginty, who was previously jailed for six weeks for contempt related to riding a horse at speed, faced a warrant for his arrest after he failed to attend court for sentencing. Ginty has also been known as the "Hemlington Cowboy" due to his riding his pony around bareback, which, although considered harmless by neighbors, was banned by courts in June of the previous year.
