PAISLEY MAN MURDERS GRANDMOTHER OVER WRONG MILK PURCHASE
A 34-year-old man named John McGregor murdered his grandmother, Margaret Trench, after she bought the wrong type of milk.According to the court proceedings, McGregor stabbed her a total of 33 times and strangled her with a washing line.
The murder occurred in her flat in Lammermuir Drive, Paisley.
Her body was found in her home's cellar in a wheelie-bin, with a knife still lodged in her neck and a rope around her throat.
The day after, McGregor called a neighbour to admit his crime, stating, 'I have done something awfy bad.
I have murdered my gran.' He also left a note at the scene claiming responsibility and indicating his intent to commit suicide.
He was later traced to a bandstand in Johnstone, where he was found armed with a knife, and he confessed to police, saying, 'It was me and only me.
I wisnae planning nothing like that.
It was me that murdered her, my gran, and I am very, very sorry.' McGregor has a history of mental illness, having been in psychiatric care since age 18 and previously convicted of theft and breach of the peace.
Although psychiatrists initially examined him as sane and fit to plead, the court accepted a plea of culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
His case was adjourned for further psychiatric evaluation.
