ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT AND RAPIST SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR KNIFEPOINT ATTACK
A manager of a care home, who was responsible for a brutal act of sexual assault involving a knife, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after evading law enforcement for two years.John Jambu, believed to be an undocumented immigrant from Nigeria, was employed in Croydon when he attacked a woman who had approached him for assistance in finding work.
He accompanied her to an interview that was later canceled and offered her a ride home.
Instead of taking her directly to her residence, he diverted to his flat in Woolwich, south London, where he committed the assault in 2010, as stated in court.
Jambu managed to stay hidden from police for two years by changing his name and adopting a new identity.
When authorities finally found him in 2012 at a different address, he was discovered hiding under a divan bed.
Police also found falsified identity documents and credit cards on him.
He previously pleaded guilty to identity fraud and received a nine-month sentence, to run concurrently with his other sentence.
The 34-year-old Jambu was sentenced to seven years at the Old Bailey for the sexual assault.
There is also the potential for his deportation.
Detective Inspector Faye Churchyard commented: "Our investigation team persisted in locating Jambu.
Despite his efforts to create a new life and identity, we found him.
He is now in prison where he belongs." The court was told that Jambu's attack occurred after he went out to buy condoms, claiming he was just stepping outside to speak with someone.
When he returned, he threatened her with a knife and raped her.
She managed to escape and called police from Woolwich police station.
Detective Constable Peter Thompson said: "Jambu used extreme violence during this attack, luring the victim to his home and raping her at knifepoint.
He then evaded capture for two years.
However, following public tips from a Crimewatch appeal, we were able to track him down.
The victim showed remarkable resilience in giving evidence two and a half years after the incident.
I hope this sentence aids her recovery from this traumatic experience."
