EAST LONDON COUNCILLOR CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT SUSPENDED BY LABOUR
Syed Hussain Ahmed, a Labour councillor representing Beckton ward in Newham, east London, was taken into custody on March 4 in relation to an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the City of London last October.He faced formal charges on May 15, appeared before a magistrates’ court on June 19, and entered a not guilty plea at Inner London Crown Court on Friday.
He was released on conditional bail.
The Labour Party has suspended him, though he has been serving as an independent councillor since Wednesday.
He will not hold any surgeries until further notice.
Ahmed was elected during the local elections held on May 7.
