DRUNK'S CHILLING WORDS AS HE STRANGLED WOMAN AFTER SHE BROKE UP WITH HIM
A 57-year-old man from Middlesbrough, John Doherty, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and given a 10-year restraining order after he strangled his ex-partner.
After the victim ended their relationship, she told Doherty not to come over.
However, on November 19, he entered her home through an unlocked back door.
The woman came downstairs and was confronted by Doherty, who had a clenched fist and told her, "If I can't have you, no one can." He then grabbed her by the neck and shoved her against the kitchen sink.
The victim managed to escape and call the police.
During the call, Doherty could be heard begging her not to report him, then threatening her, saying, "I could have you f****** dead by the time the police come." Doherty, who has 45 prior convictions, including for domestic violence, pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation.
The court heard that the victim felt a sense of relief from his imprisonment, as she was able to have a peaceful holiday season with her family.
