MAN MUST STAY AWAY FROM PARTNER FOR 10 YEARS AFTER VIOLENT ATTACK
A woman was subjected to shocking violence by a boyfriend who has now been ordered to stay away from her for 10 years. The actions of Joe Ireland led him to appear before Nottingham Crown Court for offences including assault by beating, threats to damage property, assault, causing bodily harm, and using controlling or coercive behaviour between January 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020.
The coercive and controlling conduct started after he returned from a 'lads' holiday' in the Greek Islands.
The court was told that Ireland, 24, of Woodfield Close, Broxtowe, discovered she had added a male friend on Facebook, leading to arguments where he pushed her and accused her of infidelity.
Prosecutor Chris Jeyes said she deleted her Facebook account after Ireland claimed he was talking to other girls.
Further conflicts ensued, during which he pulled her hair, got her in a headlock, and pressed on her neck.
Despite these incidents, they stayed together and moved in together in April 2020, although the relationship was already strained.
Ireland insisted she stay in to keep the house tidy and demanded she cook for him, even telling her that her family hated her.
The assault incident occurred on July 20, when he pulled her hair, knocked her to the floor, and punched her in the eye.
He also took her phone but later returned it.
On September 22, she decided to leave, sending him pictures of the house cleaning, but he threatened to 'smash everything up.' By September 28, after she returned to him, he went to strangle her, and she responded by throwing a bottle at him.
He then pulled her hair, grabbed her by her pierced ears, and pushed his fingers down her throat to stop her screaming.
Ireland received a two-year prison sentence for coercive and controlling behaviour, suspended for two years, alongside lesser concurrent sentences for the remaining charges.
The court considered a letter from him expressing regret and apology.
Ireland had spent four months in custody on remand and appeared via video link from HMP Nottingham.
Additionally, he is now required to complete a 'building better relationships programme,' 15 rehabilitation activity days, and is subject to a ten-year restraining order not to contact his former partner or visit her address.
The article concludes with information on reporting domestic abuse and organizations that offer support.
