JASON TODD FROM FURNESS ESCAPES JAIL AFTER UNDERAGE SEX CASE IN PRESTON

In April 2013, a man named Jason Todd, aged 41, from the Furness area, narrowly avoided imprisonment following serious allegations of sexual activity with a minor. The case, which unfolded at Preston Crown Court, revealed disturbing details about Todd's interactions with a teenage girl under the age of sixteen.

According to court records, Todd had initially pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual activity with the underage girl. The incident reportedly took place several years prior, and the girl herself later came forward to make a formal complaint. At the time of the offense, she appeared to be 'besotted' with Todd, which added a layer of complexity to the case.

During the proceedings, Todd's defense argued that his actions were influenced by emotional immaturity rather than predatory intent. His defense barrister emphasized that Todd was not a 'predator' seeking gratification from young girls but was instead acting out of immaturity. The judge acknowledged the unusual nature of the case but highlighted the importance of protecting young people from exploitation and their own immaturity.

Judge Anthony Russell QC sentenced Todd to two years in prison, suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period. Additionally, Todd was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and to undergo two years of supervised probation. He was also mandated to participate in a Community Sex Offenders Treatment Programme. Furthermore, he was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under sixteen for five years.

Preston Crown Court also noted that Todd's case was unusual because of the significant age difference between him and the victim. The judge emphasized that the law exists to shield young people from exploitation by older individuals and from their own immaturity, which can sometimes lead to risky decisions.

Earlier in March 2013, Todd had appeared in court facing similar allegations. He admitted to sexual activity with the underage girl during that hearing but denied another charge related to the same victim. The prosecution accepted his pleas, and Todd was remanded in custody pending sentencing scheduled for April 5. A pre-sentence report was to be prepared by the probation service to assist the court in determining the appropriate punishment.

Judge Jacqueline Beech warned Todd that he was likely to face jail time and reminded him of the court's powers to impose a custodial sentence. She also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register, reinforcing the serious consequences of his actions and the ongoing legal process.
