BROTHERS SHAHAM MIAH AND SHAHAM JOMAN MIAH CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN BARROW-IN-FURNESS AND LEEDS

Three brothers have been found guilty of serious and disturbing child sex offences committed in the towns of Barrow-in-Furness and Leeds. The convictions follow a lengthy and detailed trial at Preston Crown Court, which revealed a pattern of abuse spanning over a decade, from 1996 to 2010.

Shaha Amran Miah, aged 48, Shaha Alman Miah, aged 47, and Shaha Joman Miah, aged 38, faced numerous charges related to the sexual exploitation of young girls. The offences committed by Amran Miah included 16 counts of sexual assault, two charges of intimidation, and one count of kidnapping. Joman Miah was convicted of 40 separate offences, which included multiple counts of indecent assault, indecency with a child, sexual activity with a minor, and rape. Alman Miah was found guilty of three sexual offence charges against a single girl.

The abuse inflicted by Amran Miah and Joman Miah began when the victims were as young as six or seven years old. The assaults persisted over several years, causing profound trauma to the young girls involved. The court heard that the middle brother, Alman Miah, also engaged in sexual offences, specifically against one girl, with three charges brought against him.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case involved Joman Miah’s relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Despite knowing her age, he groomed her by giving her gifts, alcohol, and cigarettes, effectively manipulating her into a sexual relationship. Around the same period, Alman Miah also entered into a relationship with a 15-year-old girl. During this relationship, the court heard that her brother, Amran Miah, raped her on multiple occasions.

In late 2009, the 15-year-old victim faced threats from Amran Miah after she spoke to the police about the abuse. She was forcibly taken off the street by her hair and shoved into the back of a car. Inside the vehicle, Amran Miah, who was seated in the passenger seat, questioned her about her conversations with law enforcement. He then issued a chilling warning, telling her, “she would be dead” if she disclosed any further information. He also claimed he was capable of anything to protect his family, indicating a threatening and intimidating environment.

The case also revealed that Amran Miah made threats against a woman who was scheduled to be interviewed by police in 2010 regarding the brothers’ activities. Due to these threats, the interview was ultimately canceled, further illustrating the extent of their intimidation tactics.

All three men pleaded not guilty to the charges they faced. However, after a comprehensive trial, the jury returned guilty verdicts on October 28, 2024. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 21, 2025, where the court will determine the appropriate punishment for their crimes.

Derek Artis, the District Crown Prosecutor overseeing the case for CPS North West’s rape and serious sexual offences unit, expressed his condemnation of the brothers’ actions. He stated, “Shaha Amran Miah, Shaha Alman Miah, and Shaha Joman Miah groomed and exploited the girls involved in this case with complete disregard for their well-being or the devastating impact their abuse would have on their lives.”

He further commended the bravery of the victims who came forward to support the prosecution, emphasizing that their courage was instrumental in securing justice. “The CPS worked closely with Cumbria Police to build a strong case, including eye-witness testimonies and extensive phone evidence, which proved decisive in the jury’s verdict,” he added.

Details of the convictions include: Shaha Amran Miah, born on January 12, 1976, of Leeds, was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault, seven counts of indecency with a child, one count of rape of a child, one count of kidnapping, two counts of intimidation, and one count of sexual assault. Shaha Alman Miah, born on July 29, 1977, also of Leeds, was convicted of three counts of sexual activity with a child. The youngest brother, Shaha Joman Miah, born on June 22, 1986, of Doncaster, was convicted of eight counts of indecent assault, four counts of indecency with a child, three counts of sexual activity with a child, five counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, nine counts of rape of a child, six counts of sexual assault of a child, and five counts of sexual activity with a child.

Justice will now be served as the brothers await sentencing, which is scheduled for February 21, 2025, as the community and victims seek closure after these heinous crimes.
