JAMIELEIGH DEVENPORT: MIDDLESBROUGH DOG ABUSER AND STARVATION HORROR

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Middlesbrough, Jamieleigh Devenport, also known as Jamieleigh Vaughan, was found guilty of heinous animal cruelty involving her three dogs.

Born on March 2, 2002, and residing at Woodlea, Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough TS8 0TX, Devenport's actions have sparked outrage and concern among local residents and animal welfare advocates alike.

Devenport’s cruelty came to light after police investigations revealed the tragic fate of her dogs.

She initially claimed that she had given away her Labrador, but later confessed to burying the animal in her backyard.

When authorities excavated the site, they discovered the dog buried in a shallow grave, with every bone clearly visible, a heartbreaking testament to the neglect and suffering inflicted upon the pet.

The court heard that the dog had been subjected to severe starvation, with its body emaciated and suffering from a lack of proper sanitation and exercise.

Devenport’s other two dogs, a springer spaniel and a terrier named Marley, also endured neglect.

The springer spaniel was found in a state of extreme emaciation, with ribs, hips, and spine prominently visible.

The dog was so weak that it struggled to stand without support and was deemed to be at imminent risk of death due to starvation.

On December 16, 2023, police officers arrived at Devenport’s residence, where she was seen carrying her terrier Marley.

The scene inside her home was described as appalling by officers, with conditions described as “disgusting” and the smell of dog feces overwhelming.

The house was reportedly filled with filth, and the environment was deemed unfit for both her children and her pets.

Devenport’s children, who are without a father figure, showed no signs of distress over the death of their family dog.

Police noted that the children appeared unaffected by the tragic loss, which further underscored the neglectful environment they were living in.

Prosecutor Caroline McGurk stated that Devenport admitted to feeding her dogs and children takeaways but confessed that she could not afford to feed her other two dogs, providing only water for them.

She also revealed that she spent around three joints of cannabis daily, choosing to prioritize her drug use over the welfare of her animals.

Devenport, a single mother of two, is currently receiving support from a social worker.

She pleaded guilty to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

During the court proceedings, her defense lawyer, Duncan McReddie, requested that the court consider a community order at the lower end of the sentencing guidelines, citing her ongoing struggles with depression and her circumstances, including caring for her grandad and her children.

McReddie emphasized that Devenport had no malicious intent and that her mental health issues had caused her to lose control.

He expressed that she had never intended for her dogs to suffer and that her situation had spiraled beyond her control.

The court was told that Devenport was extremely fearful of the proceedings and had been under the threat of a custodial sentence since January.

Despite these pleas, Judge Jonathan Carroll decided to impose a community sentence, which includes 18 days of rehabilitation with Women’s Services and 100 hours of unpaid work.

Additionally, Devenport was banned from owning or caring for animals for ten years, a restriction that will expire in August 2034.

The judge acknowledged her mental health struggles but emphasized the severity of her neglect, stating that her home conditions were “truly shocking” and that she was clearly overwhelmed by her responsibilities.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Carroll highlighted that Devenport’s failure to care for her dogs was a reflection of her inability to cope with her circumstances.

He noted her depression as a significant factor but also stressed that her actions had resulted in the suffering and death of her animals.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the devastating consequences of neglect and cruelty in Middlesbrough.
