JAMIE GOWANS FROM DUNDEE SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE IN LATEST CASE

A man identified as Jamie Gowans, hailing from Dundee, has been formally sentenced after a lengthy and disturbing campaign of domestic abuse directed at his former partner. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of threatening, coercive, and violent behavior that spanned over three years, from 2017 to 2020. During this period, Gowans engaged in a series of aggressive acts that severely impacted his victim’s safety and well-being.

According to court records, Gowans’s abusive conduct included making threatening gestures and engaging in destructive acts during trips abroad to locations such as Lanzarote, Florida, and Edinburgh. These incidents involved damaging personal belongings and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. At one point, Gowans was accused of locking his partner inside a property without her consent, effectively trapping her and denying her freedom of movement. Such actions demonstrated a pattern of controlling and coercive behavior that escalated over time.

The violence reached a peak in February 2020, when Gowans physically assaulted his partner. Witnesses described how he violently shook her, threw her off a bed, and dragged her across the floor. During the assault, he also smashed her phone, further isolating her and preventing her from seeking help. The victim sustained injuries during this attack, which added to the severity of the case. Beyond physical violence, Gowans’s conduct included intrusive behaviors such as rummaging through her rubbish and making violent threats, including a chilling statement that he would kill her if he discovered she was seeing another man.

Following a trial, the court imposed a series of penalties on Gowans. He was ordered to pay his victim £3,000 in compensation, a sum intended to acknowledge the harm caused. Additionally, he was sentenced to complete 300 hours of unpaid work and placed under supervision for a period of two years. To further protect the victim, a non-harassment order was issued, which will remain in effect for the next five years, ensuring her safety from any future contact or intimidation.

During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Paul Brown emphasized the gravity of Gowans’s actions. He stated, “If you breach this order, prison will be available to me again. I expect to see a change in your attitude.” The court acknowledged that Gowans’s solicitor expressed some recognition of his wrongdoing, which was taken into account during sentencing. The court also highlighted the importance of rehabilitation, instructing Gowans to complete the Caledonian Men’s Project, a program aimed at addressing domestic offender behavior and promoting behavioral change.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding domestic abuse and the critical need for strict legal measures to protect victims. It underscores the importance of holding offenders accountable and providing avenues for rehabilitation to prevent future harm.
