JAMIE DEWAR'S BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE IN BURNTISLAND: A YEAR BEHIND BARS FOR VICIOUS ATTACKS

A man named Jamie Dewar, who carried out a prolonged and violent campaign of domestic abuse against his partner in Burntisland, has been sentenced to a year in prison. The disturbing case highlights a pattern of relentless violence and emotional torment that spanned nearly three years.

According to court records, Dewar, aged 26, subjected his partner to severe physical assaults, including punching and kicking her to the head and body. The violence was so intense that it continued even when she was pregnant, with Dewar striking her with a wooden bed slat on multiple occasions. The court heard that his actions were part of a sustained course of abusive behavior that took place between May 1, 2021, and January 31, 2023, at various addresses across Burntisland, Dunfermline, Rosyth, and other locations.

Prosecutor Catherine Stevenson detailed the extent of Dewar’s violence during the hearing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court. She explained that the abuse often stemmed from minor disagreements, such as disputes over household chores. In one incident in August 2021, Dewar and his partner argued, and he told her she “deserved to be hit,” before physically assaulting her by punching her in the face. Court documents reveal that Dewar repeatedly kicked her stomach while she was pregnant, a particularly alarming detail that underscores the severity of his violence. On another occasion, he threw water in her face, further demonstrating his aggressive behavior.

In September 2021, Dewar’s behavior escalated when he returned home from drinking and proposed marriage with an engagement ring. However, he later went back to the pub and, in a moment of anger, grabbed her wrist and tried to remove the ring. The pattern of physical and verbal abuse persisted, with Dewar regularly kicking, punching, and slapping his partner every few days. The situation reached a critical point in May 2023 when the woman reported that Dewar “assaulted her by beating the living hell out of her,” causing injuries severe enough to impair her movement and cause back pain.

Throughout the period from May 2021 to January 2023, Dewar maintained a pattern of harassment, frequently calling his partner if she did not respond to his messages. Court evidence indicated that he also invaded her privacy by looking through her social media accounts and messaging her male friends to stay away from her, further demonstrating controlling and abusive tendencies.

In sentencing, Sheriff Wylie Robertson imposed a four-year non-harassment order against Dewar. The sheriff also noted that a social work report revealed Dewar’s lack of insight, self-awareness, and responsibility for his actions. The report described him as being “in denial and minimising responsibility” for his behavior. Dewar has prior convictions related to domestic offenses, indicating a history of similar conduct.

During the hearing, Dewar’s defense lawyer, Sian Dolan, stated that her client, a father of three from Glasgow, takes full responsibility for his actions and recognizes the need for professional help. She also highlighted that Dewar was exposed to domestic abuse from a young age, having been a victim of physical abuse and neglect himself, which may have contributed to his violent behavior.

Ultimately, Dewar was sentenced to a year in prison for his violent and abusive conduct, a stark reminder of the serious consequences of domestic violence and the importance of protecting victims from ongoing harm.
