JOHN JOHNSTON FROM BURNTISLAND SENTENCED AFTER DRUNKEN SEXUAL ASSAULT IN FIFE
John Johnston, a resident of Burntisland, has been officially added to the Sex Offenders Register following his admission to a drunken assault on a woman in his hometown. The incident, which took place in the Fife area, has brought significant legal and social repercussions for the 37-year-old man.Johnston, who is currently unemployed and resides on Spence Avenue in Burntisland, appeared before Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court to face the charges. During the court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons. The assault occurred on July 1 at a property located within the town of Forthside, a part of the Fife region.
According to court records, Johnston initially seized the woman’s upper clothing. He then proceeded to pull her clothing down, an act he admitted was an attempt to expose her breasts. The incident was characterized by Johnston as a reckless and foolish act, which he described as a “stupid misplaced prank.”
His solicitor, David Cranston, addressed the court, stating, “Mr Johnston did offend when he was younger. He was intoxicated. He’s not tried to explain or excuse his behaviour. He realises that what he did was completely unacceptable.” Cranston emphasized that Johnston does not claim any sexual gratification from his actions and has been making efforts to reduce his alcohol consumption.
During the hearing, Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane acknowledged a clear connection between Johnston’s cannabis use and his mental health issues. She noted that his behaviour was “bizarre” and that it was linked to substance use. As part of his sentence, she ordered Johnston to be placed under supervision for a period of one and a half years, with direct intervention aimed at addressing his alcohol and drug use.
In her remarks, Sheriff McFarlane stated, “This was bizarre behaviour and you now have to suffer the consequences of that.” The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the incident and the importance of addressing underlying issues related to Johnston’s substance abuse and mental health.
