BURNTISLAND MAN CRAIG WATSON SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF CHILD ABUSE IN FIFE

Craig Watson, a 53-year-old former musician from Burntisland, Fife, has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of historic child sexual abuse spanning over a decade. The High Court in Edinburgh heard harrowing details of Watson’s crimes, which involved the sexual exploitation of four young boys between the years 1996 and 2010. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 11 years old, with one being a particularly vulnerable teenager. Watson’s offenses included rape of one child and multiple sexual assaults on the others, often taking advantage of their intoxication by alcohol to facilitate his abuse.

During the sentencing hearing, Lady Poole acknowledged the bravery of the victims who came forward to testify, despite the emotional and psychological toll it must have taken on them. She emphasized that Watson’s actions caused profound and lasting harm, and she pointed out the calculated nature of some of his offenses. The judge described Watson as a continuing threat to male children, highlighting the danger posed by his predatory behavior.

It was revealed that Watson had previously worked in the music industry and held various other jobs throughout his life. However, the court noted that he had largely wasted his potential through a pattern of alcohol and drug abuse, which contributed to his criminal behavior. Watson was found guilty on multiple counts of sexual assault and rape, and he also faced charges for failing to appear at a court hearing in Glasgow last year. His absence from court was attributed to alcoholism, but the judge rejected this as a valid excuse, underscoring the importance of court proceedings and accountability.

As a result of his convictions, Watson was sentenced to a term of 10 years in prison for the abuse, with an additional two months added for his failure to attend the Glasgow hearing. Furthermore, he has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

In her sentencing statement, Lady Poole detailed the gravity of Watson’s crimes, describing how three of his victims had been asleep when he assaulted them, often after being drugged or intoxicated. One victim recounted how Watson exploited him at his home, forcing him to perform sexual acts on Watson and vice versa. The judge noted that Watson appeared to seek out opportunities to abuse his victims, and although his alcoholism may have impaired his judgment, it did not excuse his actions.

The court acknowledged the difficulty victims faced in giving evidence, commending their courage in confronting their abuser. The emotional scars inflicted by Watson’s actions are expected to be long-lasting, with one victim providing a detailed statement outlining the severe long-term impact of the abuse.

Throughout the proceedings, Watson maintained his innocence, denying all allegations and dismissing the victims’ testimonies as fabrications. The jury, however, rejected his denial, finding him guilty of all charges.

Watson’s criminal record was described as modest, with previous convictions limited to two violent offenses and a drugs-related offense. He had only served a short prison sentence in the past, following a failed community-based sentence for assault. The social work report presented to the court highlighted patterns of planning and entrenched abusive behavior, indicating a significant risk of reoffending, particularly against male children when the opportunity arises.

In mitigation, Watson’s legal representatives pointed out his earlier life, including a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) and some itinerant work, as well as his musical talents. Despite these aspects, the court noted his life had been largely squandered through alcohol and drug misuse. The judge considered all factors, including Watson’s age, health issues, and supportive family members, before deciding on the appropriate sentence.

Ultimately, Lady Poole sentenced Watson to a determinate term of 10 years imprisonment for the sexual offenses, rejecting the possibility of an extended sentence due to the elapsed time since the crimes and other mitigating factors. An additional two months were added for his failure to appear at the Glasgow court hearing, with the sentence backdated to July 26, 2023, when Watson first entered custody related to this case. As a consequence, Watson is now subject to lifelong notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing need for public safety.
