JAMIE BROADBENT'S HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN BURNLEY: DOGS LEFT TO STARVE IN ABANDONED HOUSE
In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, Jamie Broadbent, born on April 20, 1985, and residing at Clarence Street, Burnley BB11 3HG, was convicted of causing the death of two dogs by neglect. The incident took place at a property in Bacup, where Broadbent was living at the time.According to court records, Broadbent deliberately confined two dogs, a German shepherd cross named Roxie and a terrier named Cassie, in a room without providing them with food or water. The dogs were left to suffer and ultimately perish in these deplorable conditions. The tragic scene was uncovered on May 23, 2014, when an RSPCA inspector discovered the decomposed bodies of the animals curled up on a filthy sofa inside an upstairs bedroom.
Investigations revealed that the door handle to the room had been removed, effectively trapping the dogs inside. The inspector was informed by the property’s landlord that the house had been vacant for approximately five weeks at the time of the discovery. Broadbent admitted during an interview that he was experiencing depression and had recently ended a relationship with his girlfriend, with whom he shared two children. He claimed that his mental health struggles contributed to his neglect of the animals.
He further explained that he could not afford to buy food for the dogs but was unable to justify why he had not provided them with water. Broadbent stated that the terrier, Cassie, had died first, and he removed the door handle to prevent children from entering the room. Despite the presence of two half-full bags of dog food found in the room, there was no water available for the animals.
As a result of his actions, Broadbent was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail. Additionally, he received a ban from keeping pets for a period of 10 years, which will expire in December 2024. This case highlights the severe consequences of animal cruelty and the importance of animal welfare enforcement in Burnley and surrounding areas.
