JAMES WRIGHT-KING AND JASMINE SMITH'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY IN MIDDLESBROUGH

In a disturbing case of animal cruelty that has shocked the community of Middlesbrough, James Wright-King, born on October 27, 1997, and residing at 28 Darwen Court, Hemlington, was found guilty of inflicting severe injuries on a young pug puppy named Ruby.

The incident, which spanned over several months, culminated in the tragic death of the puppy, and both defendants faced justice for their roles in this heinous act.

Jasmine Lee Smith, born on September 15, 2001, of Raydale, Hemlington, was also convicted, though her involvement was deemed less direct.

The court accepted that she was not involved in the actual injuries inflicted upon Ruby but found her guilty of neglecting her responsibilities to seek veterinary treatment and providing a safe environment for the animal.

The case drew significant attention due to the extent of the injuries and the apparent neglect involved.

The court proceedings revealed the horrifying details of Ruby’s suffering.

The puppy, only seven months old, endured multiple injuries, including burns to her back, a fractured femur, pelvis, and ribs, as well as a broken jaw on both sides.

She also suffered fractures in her neck and skull, along with a severely lacerated tongue that was bleeding profusely.

These injuries indicated a pattern of repeated violence and neglect.

The tragic sequence of events was brought to light when Ruby’s body was taken to a veterinary clinic in Middlesbrough on November 17, 2020, by Wright-King.

During the visit, he claimed to the vet that he had fallen on the puppy while playing, causing her neck to snap.

However, suspicions arose due to the nature and severity of her injuries, prompting the RSPCA to intervene.

Inspector Krissy Raine was dispatched to investigate the case.

Upon examination, it was discovered that Ruby had died very recently, as her body was still warm.

An X-ray revealed multiple fractures, including those to her neck, pelvis, femur, and ribs.

The vet also noted a deeply lacerated tongue, which had been bleeding heavily.

Further investigation uncovered that Ruby had previously been seen by a vet for lameness and a burn or scald injury, raising questions about her ongoing suffering.

An independent veterinary expert reviewed Ruby’s injuries as part of the investigation.

The expert concluded that Ruby had been subjected to at least three instances of blunt force trauma during her short life, each causing significant pain and suffering.

The expert also identified a large burn injury on her back, which the defendants claimed was caused by an allergic reaction to soap.

However, the expert believed the burn was more likely caused by bleach being scrubbed onto her back, indicating deliberate infliction.

The expert’s statement emphasized the severity of Ruby’s injuries, stating, “Ruby was caused to suffer extreme pain and distress as a consequence of the multiple fractures and soft tissue injuries that she sustained as a result of at least three very violent blunt force traumas, as well as the severe burns that were in my expert opinion also deliberately inflicted by Mr.

Wright-King.” The expert further noted that the injury to Ruby’s brain and spinal cord was so severe that she was likely rendered instantly unconscious during her final trauma.

Throughout the court proceedings, both Wright-King and Smith maintained their innocence, denying any involvement in causing harm to Ruby.

When questioned by the RSPCA inspector about the injuries, Wright-King reportedly responded, “You’re joking, Ruby was like our child.” Despite their claims of accidental injury, the court found sufficient evidence to convict both defendants on all charges.

Jasmine Smith was convicted on two counts: failing to follow veterinary advice regarding Ruby’s leg injury and neglecting to provide a safe environment for the puppy.

Her legal representative, Neil Douglas, argued that Smith bore some responsibility but was not present during the incidents, as she lived elsewhere.

He described her as a law-abiding individual working two jobs, including one at a golf club, and expressed her deep remorse.

Neil Douglas also addressed Wright-King’s case, highlighting his troubled background, including foster care during his teenage years.

He emphasized that nothing could justify his actions and requested that any prison sentence be suspended, as Wright-King was due to start a job working 12-hour shifts at SK Foods.

After a lengthy deliberation, the magistrates delivered their verdicts, describing this case as one of the most serious instances of animal cruelty they had encountered.

The magistrate expressed their horror at the case, underscoring the severity of the injuries inflicted upon Ruby.

In sentencing, Wright-King was sentenced to six months in prison, ordered to pay £728 in fees and charges, and banned from owning animals for life with no right of appeal for 25 years.

Jasmine Smith received an 18-month community order, including 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days, 150 hours of unpaid work, and £695 in fees and charges.

She was also handed a 10-year ban on keeping animals, which cannot be appealed for five years.

RSPCA inspector Krissy Raine expressed her distress over the case, stating, “Ruby was a young pup who was only two months old when the defendants acquired her, and during the next five months, she suffered multiple injuries.

It’s so hard to comprehend the pain she went through.

I found it a deeply upsetting case to investigate, and the magistrates said in sentencing that they were horrified.” This case has left a lasting impact on the Middlesbrough community, highlighting the importance of animal welfare and the need for vigilance against cruelty and neglect.

The authorities hope that justice serves as a warning to others and reinforces the community’s commitment to protecting vulnerable animals from such horrific abuse.
