JAMES JOHNS FROM UPTON ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE GROOMING TEENAGE GIRL AT CORNWALL HOLIDAY PARK
In a case that has shocked the local community, James Johns, a 25-year-old man from Upton, was spared immediate imprisonment despite being found guilty of grooming a teenage girl he met while working at a holiday park in Cornwall.The incident took place during the autumn half-term of 2011, when Johns, who was employed at the White Acres holiday park in Newquay, engaged in inappropriate and sexual conduct with a 15-year-old girl.
According to court proceedings, Johns had established a relationship with the girl through social media, specifically Facebook, after she and her family visited the holiday park for a holiday.
The court heard that Johns, who had been working at the park for several years, began communicating with her when he was 21 years old, and she was only 14.
The communication quickly escalated from casual chatting to more inappropriate exchanges, with Johns requesting explicit photographs from the girl.
She complied, sending him images of herself, while he reciprocated by sending her pictures of himself.
The situation worsened when the girl visited the park again, this time to see Johns, who was working as an entertainer and running a club for children aged 11 to 15.
During this visit, she confided that Johns had become increasingly persistent and had effectively come on strong to her.
It was during this period that Johns ultimately persuaded her to engage in sexual activity.
The girl later reported the incident to the police.
The investigation revealed that Johns had also begun contacting her younger sister via Facebook.
In early 2013, Johns asked the younger girl for her phone number, inquired about her age, and asked whether she had a webcam.
He instructed her not to tell anyone about his messages, claiming he could get into trouble if his contact with her was discovered.
Following these revelations, Johns, who resided on Norwich Drive in Upton, was suspended from his job at the holiday park and subsequently arrested.
He admitted to having sex with the girl, and during earlier court hearings, he pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child.
Representing Johns, defense lawyer Ramsay Quaife described his client as remorseful and deeply scared by the situation.
Johns was supported in court by his pregnant partner, highlighting the personal toll of the case.
Judge Christopher Harvey Clark, QC, delivered the verdict, sentencing Johns to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years.
The judge also ordered him to be under probation supervision for two years, complete 120 hours of unpaid community service, and register as a sex offender.
The judge clarified that although Johns was involved in running a youth club, this did not constitute an abuse of trust, and he emphasized the importance of rehabilitation over incarceration in this case.
